Google Sketchup = Drawing Minus the Meltdowns

As a child I used to watch my dad, a mechanical engineer, use CAD software to design structures. He let me play around with it, but the usability had nothing on Google Sketchup. I’ve been hearing anecdotes from parents that kids on the spectrum are absolutely in love with Sketchup and pick it up pretty naturally due to their strong visual-spatial abilities.

The YouTube video above and this Newsweek article explain that drawing by hand can be a frustrating affair (perhaps motor skills get in the way?), while Google Sketchup finally enables kids on the spectrum to turn what’s in their head into some kind of reality. After hearing from so many thrilled parents, Google put together Project Spectrum.

That is really cool. I’m going to share this with colleagues at school. Actually, I think I’m going to share your entire blog with my fellow teachers.

Thanks! That’s even better coming from a teacher. Let me know if you guys end up using Sketchup!
