Twitter is a great way to meet new people with similar interests. Unlike other social networking platforms, you're not required to divulge your real name or post a picture, so there's that added aspect of anonymity should you need it. Would just add that there are lots of great 3rd-party Twitter interfaces. I personally use Echofon for Firefox & iPhone: http://www.echofon.com/ There are also mobile phone-specific apps like Twitterific, TwitBird and Tweetie. Tweetdeck is good too, and very popular!
