The Aspie Guide to Job Interviews (Part 2 – Grooming & Attire)

Did you miss Part 1?  It covers the whys and hows of promptness and you can catch up here.

Grooming & Attire

  • The goal is to dress more formally than you would on the job.  This often involves a suit, or at the very very least a nice dress shirt and slacks (or skirt).
  • Avoid bright/clashing colors and distracting makeup and jewelry.  This keeps the interviewer’s focus on what you’re saying, not what you’re wearing.
  • Try to choose clothes with soft fabrics that don’t cling, because you’ll end up pulling at your clothes the whole time.  I know this is tough with so many layers that tuck in!  Your best bet is to find clothes that actually fit correctly.  When they’re too tight somewhere, they’re more likely to pull and make you uncomfortable.
  • Women might feel more comfortable with collars that are cut further away from the neck and silkier blouses, but make sure to keep the look professional.  For men, I’ve found that no-iron shirts are the scratchiest so you might want to avoid them no matter how convenient they are.  Unfortunately I haven’t found a way around the tie yet!
  • Remember to wear deodorant…better yet antiperspirant.  Because no one needs to see or smell you sweat.  (Speaking of which, make sure your palms are dry before you shake anyone’s hand.)
