The 4th of July is upon us, and more importantly, this might actually be the 2nd weekend in a row now with no rain! This is a big deal if you live on the East Coast, where we’ve been living through months of endless storms. It means the summer cookout and outdoor party season may now commence.
Some tips to help you be a good guest:
- Make sure to greet adults, especially the hosts (the people throwing the party). Try to look for their cues as to whether they want to shake hands, hug, or pat you on the back. And don’t forget to say goodbye; that counts too!
- Use utensils to take food from a shared dish – not your hands! Once you’ve touched even one piece of food with your hands, people consider the rest “dirty” and won’t eat it. If you can’t find a utensil, just ask…someone will gladly find one.
- If you need to pour a drink and are worried about your coordination, ask a nearby adult you trust to help you. It’s much less embarassing than risking a spill.
- Need to find a bathroom? Ask the host or one of your friends/family. Don’t go exploring in the home on your own, and especially not in bedrooms…too often this is mistaken for snooping or stealing. If the door is closed, knock and wait a few seconds before entering.
Have a relaxing weekend!

I love the first point. Also important when you are the host… meet and greet and see if they would like a drink… telling them to sit down in the seat you’ve already picked out for them and not offering a drink is apparently bad form.
