Encourage Drawing On The Walls

I had some adorable artwork on my wall as a child. A one-of-a-kind, Etsy-worthy carnival of elephants.  I don’t think my dad saw it that way, because after my neighbor and I finished drawing it on the wall, I got a good spanking.

Children love to see walls as a giant canvas to to express themselves and fortunately there are products designed to harness that creativity.  Chalkboard paint is popular these days, but what if you’re not sure you can live with black walls and chalk dust?  Enter the Frames Wallpaper ($40/roll, Land of Nod):

A less permanent (and less pricey) alternative is to take a roll of butcher paper and draw a variety of fun frames.  They don’t have to be rectangular!  Why not round?  Baroque?  Ikea has a giant roll of paper that would be perfect for this purpose for only $6.99.

If you’re not going to cover an entire wall, I’d suggest clearly defining the space to avoid an “oops”.  How about the back of a door?  Or run the paper across the middle of the wall (with a colored border if your child needs that visual STOP! cue) to create a museum effect.  Just don’t go higher than he or she can reach!
